The American Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club was founded with the AKC-FSS in 2008 to preserve and promote the Smallest of the Podengo breeds.

We are an open club, EVERYONE is welcome to Join !

New members can join anytime throughout the year!

The APPPC is the first National breed club established with the AKC-FSS for the Pequeno.

What is in a Name? Well lets break down the name to make it easier to understand.

First, Portuguese means that the breed originates from Portugal. In fact, they are the National breed of Portugal.
Next we have Podengo which means hunting dog from the Mediterranean region.
And finally we have Pequeno which means Small.
Put them all together, and you have the name for our Breed!
The most commonly used short version is:  Podengo Pequeno.

The Podengo Pequeno is a Primitive hunting breed that is slightly longer in body than tall at the withers.
They are Hounds even though they resemble terriers.
They are used to hunt rabbits in dense cover still to this day. Most are still bred and raised in Hunt packs throughout Portugal.
There are 231 AKC-FSS Recorded Podengo Pequeno's in the US. AKC-FSS recorded Podengo Pequenos can compete in AKC Companion and Performance events. Podengo Pequeno's can be exhibited in AKC B matches if the breed has been included by the hosting club.
Podengo
Pequeno's range in size from  8 inches to a maximum of 12.5 inches tall at the wither or 20-30 cm.  Podengo Pequeno's weigh roughly 8-14 pounds.
The breed comes in 2 types: Smooth (with undercoat) and Wire or longhair (lacking undercoat). Some breeding between the 2 types is allowed since the wire or longhair is still being developed.
The most common type of Podengo Pequeno in the US is the Wire or Longhair variety making up nearly 80% of the population.
They can be wary of strangers. They need to be allowed to greet strangers on their terms. The Podengo Pequeno is exhibited on the Table and should never be examined on the floor.
The AKC-FSS has SPLIT the Pequeno from the Medio/Grande (awaiting board approval). The AKC confirmed that the Pequeno is a separate breed under AKC's definition of a breed.
We were notified that the AKC will be splitting the Pequeno from the larger sizes sometime in 2009. New Certificates and pedigrees for Pequenos will start arriving after AKC completes the split.
